Sam Cooke: Portrait of a Legend 1951–1964 is a career-spanning collection celebrating one of the most influential voices in American music. The album brings together recordings from Cooke’s early gospel years with the Soul Stirrers through his R&B, pop, and soul hits, creating a broad portrait of his extraordinary career.

I designed the album cover, CD packaging, and booklet for ABKCO Music & Records, using archival photography and a restrained editorial approach to let Cooke’s presence remain the focal point. A palette of rich blues, black and white imagery, and clean typography gives the package a timeless, sophisticated quality while distinguishing it from a more nostalgic treatment.

The interior design extends the visual system across photography, liner notes, credits, and track information, creating a cohesive presentation for a collection that spans more than a decade of groundbreaking music. The result is a piece of music packaging and editorial design that feels contemporary while respecting the history and significance of Sam Cooke’s legacy.
